Pode-se pensar que quando Dale Carnegie escreveu a frase \u201cAlgu\u00e9m raramente vence se n\u00e3o tiver prazer no que faz\u201d ele n\u00e3o estava pensando na fam\u00edlia Tucker.<\/span> <\/p>\n

Ningu\u00e9m parece estar tendo mais prazer do que esta fam\u00edlia que tem 8 membros, de Riverton. E ningu\u00e9m tem mais orgulho de ser pais do que Ben e Penney, que est\u00e3o profundamente envolvidos na cria\u00e7\u00e3o n\u00e3o de um, mas de tr\u00eas filhos com s\u00edndrome de Down. \u201cQuando as pessoas dizem, \u201co que voc\u00ea faria se pudesse trocar o fato de Abby (a filha de 7 anos de Ben e Penney) ter s\u00edndrome de Down?\u201d eu sempre digo, \u201cBem, ent\u00e3o ela n\u00e3o seria a Abby\u201d. Tendo se conhecido num encontro para solteiros depois de terem se formado em diferentes escolas de segundo grau, Ben e Penney n\u00e3o tinham id\u00e9ia de onde o futuro lhes levaria, a n\u00e3o ser, saber que quando encontrassem um problema dificil, eles sempre escolheriam lutar ao inv\u00e9s de fugir.<\/span><\/p>\n

Ap\u00f3s o nascimento de Jake que agora tem 13 anos, Ashley, 12 e Baylee, de 10 anos de idade, Penney e Ben ficaram sabendo que eles estavam esperando outro filho, mas n\u00e3o tinham id\u00e9ia de todas as mudancas que estavam por vir.<\/span><\/p>\n

Um minuto e meio depois do nascimento de Abby (apelido para Abigail), \u201cela estava roxa\u201d, Penney disse. Sem saber o que pensar, ouviram em seguida palavras chocantes. \u201cAtrav\u00e9s de nossas avalia\u00e7oes iniciais, esta crian\u00e7a tem s\u00edndrome de Down\u201d e foi assim que Ben e Penney ficaram sabendo desse evento que mudou suas vidas.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cRapidamente eles a levaram para a unidade de terapia intensiva, e depois foi transferida para receber os primeiros cuidados\u201d, disse Penney.<\/span><\/p>\n

O \u00fanico desejo de Ben e Penney era que Abby, que tinha leucemia transit\u00f3ria e insufici\u00eancia card\u00edaca, melhorasse. Tr\u00eas semanas depois o desejo deles foi realizado quando eles levaram Abby para casa.<\/span><\/p>\n

Depois de 6 meses de quimioterapia, a leucemia de Abby entrou em fase de remiss\u00e3o. No pr\u00f3ximo m\u00eas de junho Abby completar\u00e1 cinco anos livre de c\u00e2ncer.<\/span><\/p>\n

ComoAbby nasceu em 2000, em 2005 os Tucker come\u00e7aram sentir que estava na hora de outra crian\u00e7a se juntar \u00e0 fam\u00edla. E ambos sabiam que o b\u00eabe que eles queriam era uma crian\u00e7a com s\u00edndrome de Down.<\/span><\/p>\n

Depois de um primeiro telefonema em mar\u00e7o de 2005, e ap\u00f3s todas as verifica\u00e7\u00f5es legais necess\u00e1rias, eles souberam em outubro que Mickey, que havia nascido em agosto, estava dispon\u00edvel para ado\u00e7\u00e3o.<\/span><\/p>\n

Ap\u00f3s deixar seus filhos com uma tia, Ben e Penney foram se encontrar com Mickey. Sem dizer nenhuma palavra a ningu\u00e9m, a n\u00e3o ser para a pessoa que tomava conta das crian\u00e7as, quando Ben e Penney voltaram, convidaram toda fam\u00edlia para ir at\u00e9 sua casa. Trazendo Mickey para a sala, anunciaram para seus pais e todos os demais que estavam presentes \u201cConhe\u00e7am seu novo neto\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n

Quando Mickey tinha 1 ano e meio, os Tucker novamente sentiram que era hora de outra crian\u00e7a se juntar \u00e0 familia. Novamente eles usaram o telefone.<\/span><\/p>\n

Surpresos com um telefonema no dia seguinte dizendo que havia uma crian\u00e7a dispon\u00edvel para ado\u00e7\u00e3o, eles n\u00e3o hesitaram em fazer tudo o que era preciso para trazer o b\u00eabe Raddie (Conrad) para casa.<\/span><\/p>\n

Com alguns problemas m\u00e9dicos que necessitaram cirurgia corretiva, Raddie agora goza de boa sa\u00fade, e junta, toda a fam\u00edlia se dedica a assegurar que eles desfrutem de bons momentos, andar em motos de quatro rodas, a cavalo ou acampar, e qualquer outra atividade em que eles possam se envolver.<\/span><\/p>\n

A Abby vai para uma escola de primeiro grau em Riverton onde ela faz parte de um programa com um grupo de oito alunos. Mickey frequenta uma escola especial em Salt Lake City. <\/p>\n

One could wonder if, when Dale Carnegie penned the words, “People rarely succeed unless they have fun in what they are doing,” he wasn’t thinking of the Tucker family.
No one seems to be having more run than this Riverton family of eight. And no one is more proud of their parenthood than Ben and Penney, who are deeply imbedded into the years of raising not one, but three, Down syndrome children.
“When people say, ‘What would you do if you could trade the fact that Abby (Ben and Penney’s 7-year-old daughter) has Down syndrome?’ I always say, ‘Well, then she wouldn’t be Abby.’ “
Ben nods as he looks at Abby. “We’re the blessed ones.”
Having met at a singles’ activity after graduating from different high schools, Ben and Penney had no idea where the future would take them, except to know that when it came to difficult problems, they would always choose the fight of staying rather than the flight of running away.
After giving birth to Jake, who is now 13, Ashley, 12, and 10-year-old Baylee, Penney and Ben learned they were expecting again, but they had no idea of all the changes that were coming their way.
One and one-half minutes after the birth of Abby (short for Abigail), “she was purple,” Penney says. Not knowing what to think, shocking words followed. “From our initial evaluation, this child has Down syndrome.”
And this is how Ben and Penny learned of this life-altering event.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

“Quickly, they took her to I.C.U., then transferred her to Primary Children’s,” Penny said.
Ben and Penny’s only wish was for Abby, who was suffering from transient leukemia and heart failure, to get better. Three weeks later, their wish came true when they took Abby home.
The Tuckers were told Abby had an 8 percent chance of developing full-blown leukemia and were shocked when this became the case.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

After six months of chemotherapy, Abby’s leukemia went into remission. This coming June will make the fifth anniversary of Abby being cancer-free.
With Abby born in 2000, by the year 2005, the Tuckers began to feel like there was another baby in store to join their family. And they both knew the baby they wanted was one with Down syndrome<\/\nsp\nan><\/span><\/p>\n

After making their first phone call in March 2005, following all of the necessary background checks, they learned in October that Mikey, who had been born in August, was available.
Arranging for their children to stay with an aunt, Ben and Penney left to meet Mikey. Without saying a word to anyone but the children’s caregiver, Ben and Penney returned home and invited everyone over. Carrying Mikey into the room, they announced to their parents and everyone else who had gathered, “Meet your new grandson.”
When Mikey was about 18 months, the Tuckers again felt another child was to join their family. Again, they picked up the phone.

Surprised when a call came the next day saying there was a baby available, they didn’t hesitate to do all that was needed to bring baby Raddie (Conrad) home.
With some medical problems that needed corrective surgery, Raddie is now in good health, and together the family works to make sure they share good times together, four-wheeling, horseback riding and camping, and any other activity they can get their hands, or feet, on.
Abby attends an elementary school in Riverton where she is part of an eight-student cluster program. Mikey attends a special school in Salt Lake City.
And will there be more children with Down Syndrome to join the Tucker family?
