Maya Angelou, ou Marguerite Ann Johnson, a poeta negra norte-americana, cujo poema \u201cAinda assim, eu me levanto\u201d, lido pelo ator Milton Gon\u00e7alves, literalmente, levantou a plat\u00e9ia de cerca de 2 mil pessoas no Teatro do Espa\u00e7o Vivo, do Rio, na \u00faltima segunda-feira (31\/05) na entrega do Pr\u00eamio Cam\u00e9lia da Liberdade 2010, nasceu em St. Louis, Missouri, no dia 04 de abril de 1.928.<\/p>\n

Criada pela av\u00f3 paterna, Annie Henderson, na Calif\u00f3rnia, Arkansas e St. Louis, Angelou foi estuprada pelo namorado da m\u00e3e quando tinha apenas oito anos, o que fez com que perdesse a voz por anos. A voz, ela recuperou com uma ajuda de uma vizinha e com ela o amor pela literatura.<\/p>\n

Com 17 anos, se tornou a primeira motorista negra de \u00f4nibus em San Francisco e tamb\u00e9m foi m\u00e3e solteira em um tempo em que isso beirava ao esc\u00e2ndalo. Tamb\u00e9m foi a primeira mulher negra roteirista e diretora em Hollywood.<\/p>\n

Carreira<\/strong><\/p>\n

No in\u00edcio dos anos 50, assumiu o pseud\u00f4nimo famoso, firmando-se como atriz, cantora e dan\u00e7arina em v\u00e1rias montagens teatrais que percorreram o pa\u00eds, como Porgy and Bess, Calypso Heatwave, The Blacks e Cabaret for Freedom.<\/p>\n

Foi amiga de Martin Luther King Jr. e Malcolm X e ativista com ambos no Movimento dos Direitos Civis norte-americano. Nos anos 60 viajou pela \u00c1frica, como jornalista e professora, ajudando v\u00e1rios movimentos de independ\u00eancia africanos. Em 1970, publicou o primeiro livro, I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings, para grande aclama\u00e7\u00e3o, e foi nomeado para o Pulitzer Prize em poesia no ano seguinte.<\/p>\n

Em 1993, Angelou leu um de seus poemas, “On the Pulse of Morning”, na posse de Bill Clinton como presidente;recebendo o Grammy de melhor texto recitado pela leitura do mesmo.
\nAtualmente, ela \u00e9 professora de hist\u00f3ria americana na Wake Forest University, Carolina do Norte, e d\u00e1 palestras.<\/p>\n
