A voz, ela recuperou com uma ajuda de uma vizinha e com ela o amor pela literatura.<\/p>\n<p>Com 17 anos, se tornou a primeira motorista negra de \u00f4nibus em San Francisco e tamb\u00e9m foi m\u00e3e solteira em um tempo em que isso beirava ao esc\u00e2ndalo. Tamb\u00e9m foi a primeira mulher negra roteirista e diretora em Hollywood.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Carreira<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>No in\u00edcio dos anos 50, assumiu o pseud\u00f4nimo famoso, firmando-se como atriz, cantora e dan\u00e7arina em v\u00e1rias montagens teatrais que percorreram o pa\u00eds, como Porgy and Bess, Calypso Heatwave, The Blacks e Cabaret for Freedom.<\/p>\n<p>Foi amiga de Martin Luther King Jr. e Malcolm X e ativista com ambos no Movimento dos Direitos Civis norte-americano. Nos anos 60 viajou pela \u00c1frica, como jornalista e professora, ajudando v\u00e1rios movimentos de independ\u00eancia africanos.
