This session, under the<br \/>\ntheme: \u201cImplementing the Convention through Advancing Inclusion of Persons<br \/>\nwith Disabilities\u201d, will begin with the election of members of the<br \/>\nCommittee on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities and include<br \/>\nsubstantive roundtable discussions and an interactive informal session with<br \/>\ncivil society. Elections for members of the Committee will be held in<br \/>\naccordance with article 34 of the Convention. As the total number of<br \/>\nratifications has passed 80, the membership of the Committee will increase<br \/>\nby six to a total of 18 members. Additional elections will be held for the<br \/>\nsix members whose term expires in 2010. It is the first country to submit its<br \/>\nreport. More information:<br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.internationaldisabilityalliance.org\/spain-has-been-the-first-country-to-submit-its-initial-report-to-the-crpd-committee\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">http:\/\/www.internationaldisabilityalliance.org\/spain-has-been-the-first-country-to-submit-its-initial-report-to-the-crpd-committee\/ <\/a><br \/>\n.<\/p>\n<p>HIGHLIGHTS<\/p>\n<p>Disability included in Millennium Development Goal Report 2010<br \/>\nThe 2010 MDGs Global Report, which has recently been issued, includes<br \/>\nseveral references to disability and persons with disabilities, especially<br \/>\nunder MDG2 &#8211; achieving universal primary education.\u00a0 This Report comes five<br \/>\nyears before the target date for the Millennium Development Goals, and<br \/>\nleaders from around the world will be gathering at the United Nations this<br \/>\nSeptember to undertake a comprehensive review of progress and together<br \/>\nchart a course for accelerated action on the MDGs between now and 2015. The<br \/>\ninclusion of disability perspectives and persons with disabilities in<br \/>\nrealizing the achievement of the MDGs has been reiterated by the General<br \/>\nAssembly in its resolutions 63\/150 and 64\/131. The experts will review current standards<br \/>\nand practices on accessibility and work to develop practical guidelines for<br \/>\ndisability-inclusive policy frameworks to ensure accessibility for persons<br \/>\nwith disabilities, with reasonable adaptation, in both the physical<br \/>\nenvironment and in the fields of information and communication<br \/>\ntechnologies. With a view to foster the building of an international<br \/>\ncommunity of experts on all aspects of accessibility, SCRPD is calling for<br \/>\nexperts to email the details of their expertise and contact information, so<br \/>\nas to establish a global community of experts to move forward the<br \/>\naccessibility agenda. The aim of this<br \/>\nmeeting is to address the topic of inclusion for women living with<br \/>\ndisabilities. Nearly 50<br \/>\nrepresentatives from NGOs, the civil society and the private sector spoke<br \/>\nat the event and participated in an open dialogue with Government<br \/>\nrepresentatives. The<br \/>\ndiscussion entitled \u201cNew Financial Access Frontier:\u00a0 Including People with<br \/>\nDisabilities\u201d included representatives from microfinance institutions and<br \/>\ndisability organizations who deliberated on how they could best contribute<br \/>\nto increasing access to financial services for persons with disabilities<br \/>\nliving in poverty, worldwide. More information:<br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/go.worldbank.org\/K39C68QSG0.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">http:\/\/go.worldbank.org\/K39C68QSG0. <\/a><\/p>\n<p>GPDD Working Group on the reconstruction of Haiti<br \/>\nDuring the major reconstruction that follows most natural disasters,<br \/>\nplanners often miss opportunities to avoid recreating the exclusion of<br \/>\npersons with disabilities by adapting the design of the built environment.<br \/>\nIt is far more cost-effective to modify the plans for a new building at the<br \/>\noutset than to adapt an existing building to make it accessible. The Global<br \/>\nPartnership for Disability and Development (GPDD) has initiated a Working<br \/>\nGroup on Haiti Reconstruction to ensure that reconstruction efforts after<br \/>\nthe Haiti earthquake involve persons with disabilities during all stages<br \/>\nand that all rebuilt and newly built infrastructure is fully accessible to<br \/>\nand usable by people with disabilities. As part of this Forum, a networking event on the CRPD and the Right<br \/>\nto the City was arranged by \u201cDeaf Aid\u201d and \u201cDisabled Child Monitor\u201d, two<br \/>\norganizations of persons with disabilities in Kenya. Supported by the UN<br \/>\nHabitat Youth and Partners Section, the presenters showcased issues related<br \/>\nto children with disabilities from the Kibera slums in Nairobi.
