Third Conference of States Parties, 1-3 September 2010
\nThe third Conference of States Parties to the Convention (COSP) will be
\nheld from 1-3 September 2010 at UNHQ in New York. This session, under the
\ntheme: \u201cImplementing the Convention through Advancing Inclusion of Persons
\nwith Disabilities\u201d, will begin with the election of members of the
\nCommittee on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities and include
\nsubstantive roundtable discussions and an interactive informal session with
\ncivil society. Elections for members of the Committee will be held in
\naccordance with article 34 of the Convention. As the total number of
\nratifications has passed 80, the membership of the Committee will increase
\nby six to a total of 18 members. Additional elections will be held for the
\nsix members whose term expires in 2010. Information, including NGO

Spain submits its initial report to the CRPD Committee
\nOn 3 May, Spain submitted its initial report on its implementation of the
\nCRPD to the Committee on the CRPD. It is the first country to submit its
\nreport. More information:

HIGHLIGHTS<\/p>\n

Disability included in Millennium Development Goal Report 2010
\nThe 2010 MDGs Global Report, which has recently been issued, includes
\nseveral references to disability and persons with disabilities, especially
\nunder MDG2 – achieving universal primary education.\u00a0 This Report comes five
\nyears before the target date for the Millennium Development Goals, and
\nleaders from around the world will be gathering at the United Nations this
\nSeptember to undertake a comprehensive review of progress and together
\nchart a course for accelerated action on the MDGs between now and 2015. The
\ninclusion of disability perspectives and persons with disabilities in
\nrealizing the achievement of the MDGs has been reiterated by the General
\nAssembly in its resolutions 63\/150 and 64\/131. See the full Report at:

Expert Group Meeting on Accessibility, 28 to 30 June 2010
\nThe \u201cExpert Group Meeting on Accessibility: Innovative and cost-effective
\napproaches for inclusive and accessible development\u201d will be organized in
\ncollaboration with the World Bank and will be held at their Headquarters in
\nWashington, DC from 28-30 June. The experts will review current standards
\nand practices on accessibility and work to develop practical guidelines for
\ndisability-inclusive policy frameworks to ensure accessibility for persons
\nwith disabilities, with reasonable adaptation, in both the physical
\nenvironment and in the fields of information and communication
\ntechnologies. With a view to foster the building of an international
\ncommunity of experts on all aspects of accessibility, SCRPD is calling for
\nexperts to email the details of their expertise and contact information, so
\nas to establish a global community of experts to move forward the
\naccessibility agenda. More information:

GAID\/G3ict \u2013 Roundtable on women with disabilities and ICTs
\nOn 1 July, an ECOSOC Ministerial Roundtable meeting will be organized by
\nG3ict and GAID on \u201cThe role of Information and Communication Technologies
\nin Empowering Women with Disabilities\u201d, at UN Headquarters. The aim of this
\nmeeting is to address the topic of inclusion for women living with
\ndisabilities. Experts in ICT applications for persons with disabilities
\nwill illustrate the role of ICT in empowering women with disabilities and
\ndiscuss issues such as the role of accessible internet resources for work,
\nhealth, education and social networking, how accessible mobile phones can
\nchange the lives of women with disabilities, breaking the isolation of
\nwomen with disabilities with ICTs, accessible workplaces and accessible
\nfinancial services, and success stories, pending issues, and new solutions
\noffered by industry and service providers.\u00a0 More information:

Panel discussion on women with disabilities at ECOSOC AMR
\nOn 1 July, the Secretariat of the Convention on the Rights of Persons with
\nDisabilities will co-organize a lunch-time panel discussion on women with

\nECOSOC High-Level Segment, held at UN Headquarters. More information:

UNDAW- Online Discussion on Gender, Education and Employment
\nOn 7 July at 10am (New York, EST) the UN Division for the Advancement of
\nWomen (UNDAW) will organizing an online Podcast featuring experts who will
\ndiscuss linkages between women\u2019s and girls’ access to and participation in
\nformal and non-formal education and training, and their equal access to
\nfull employment and decent work. The Podcast will be available at the UNDAW

UN-NGLS – Interactive Hearings on the UN MDG Summit
\nOn 14 \u2013 15 June the Informal Interactive Hearings of the General Assembly
\nwith Non-governmental organizations, Civil society organizations and the
\nPrivate sector were convened at the UN Headquarters in New York. Nearly 50
\nrepresentatives from NGOs, the civil society and the private sector spoke
\nat the event and participated in an open dialogue with Government
\nrepresentatives. Also included in the list of speakers was Mr. Imed Chaker,
\nchairman of Arab Organisation of People with Disabilities, who spoke on
\nbehalf of the International Disability Alliance. More information:

UNESCO \u2013 Interactive session on ICTs and Person with Disabilities\u201d
\nOn 11 May, UNESCO in partnership with the NGO Sindbad Mediterranean without
\nDisabilities organized an interactive session on Information and
\nCommunication Technologies and Persons with Disabilities at the WSIS Forum
\n2010 in Geneva, Switzerland. The session presented good practices in the
\nuse of ICT to facilitate social inclusion of persons with disabilities.

World Bank – New financial access frontier for persons with disabilities
\nOn 18 June, a roundtable discussion was held at the World Bank
\nHeadquarters, convened by the Center for Financial Inclusion, in
\npartnership with the Disability and Development Team of the World Bank. The
\ndiscussion entitled \u201cNew Financial Access Frontier:\u00a0 Including People with
\nDisabilities\u201d included representatives from microfinance institutions and
\ndisability organizations who deliberated on how they could best contribute
\nto increasing access to financial services for persons with disabilities
\nliving in poverty, worldwide. More information:

GPDD Working Group on the reconstruction of Haiti
\nDuring the major reconstruction that follows most natural disasters,
\nplanners often miss opportunities to avoid recreating the exclusion of
\npersons with disabilities by adapting the design of the built environment.
\nIt is far more cost-effective to modify the plans for a new building at the
\noutset than to adapt an existing building to make it accessible. The Global
\nPartnership for Disability and Development (GPDD) has initiated a Working
\nGroup on Haiti Reconstruction to ensure that reconstruction efforts after
\nthe Haiti earthquake involve persons with disabilities during all stages
\nand that all rebuilt and newly built infrastructure is fully accessible to
\nand usable by people with disabilities. To participate in this group,

UNHABITAT \u2013 World Urban Forum and disability
\nOn 22 to 26 March 22, the 5th World Urban Forum was held in Rio de Janeiro
\nBrazil. As part of this Forum, a networking event on the CRPD and the Right
\nto the City was arranged by \u201cDeaf Aid\u201d and \u201cDisabled Child Monitor\u201d, two
\norganizations of persons with disabilities in Kenya. Supported by the UN
\nHabitat Youth and Partners Section, the presenters showcased issues related
\nto children with disabilities from the Kibera slums in Nairobi. The event
\nentitled \u201cAn Inclusive City is an Inclusive Nation!\u201d showed how an
\ninclusive city can sustain the livelihood of all people. More information:

Disability and Ageing Publication \u2013 Call for papers
\nSCRPD and the UN Programme on Ageing are supporting the development of a
\npublication on disability and ageing. Currently, papers are being sought
\nfor inclusion in the publication, which will focus on: similarities and
\ndifferences in the impact of disability on younger an older persons;
\ndisability, ageing and poverty; design for disability (rural\/urban design,
\nhome\/community design; affects in later years of acquired v\/s born-with
\ndisability; the impact of vision, hearing and\/or mobility loss on older

18 – 23 July: XVIII International AIDS Conference (AIDS 2010)

\nfrom the Civil Rights Division of the US Department of Justice. The
\nconference aims to provide attendees with the tools and information needed

\npublic, political and media attention and to make sure that the global

\nThe International Association for Universal Design will organize the

\nCo-existence\u201d. The conference organizers are inviting educators, product
\nplanning and developers, administrators, consultants and civic activists

3 December: International Day of Persons with Disabilities.
\nThe theme of the 2010 commemoration of the International Day of Persons
\nwith Disabilities is “Keeping the promise: Mainstreaming disability in the

\npromote an understanding of disability issues and mobilize support for the
\ndignity, rights and well-being of persons with disabilities. It also seeks
\nto increase awareness of gains to be derived from the inclusion of persons

July 3 – 8, 2011: Access Africa – 5th IDP Africa Forum

\nuniversities and Government ministries, international organizations,

Forced Migration Review: Feature on disability and displacement
\nThe latest issue of FMR, a widely read and consulted publication on refugee
\nand internal displacement issues, includes 27 articles focusing on
\ndisability and displacement, including an introduction by Shuaib Chalklen,
\nSpecial Rapporteur for Disability. This issue shows why persons with
\ndisabilities who are displaced need particular consideration. The review
\nhighlights initiatives taken (locally and at the global level) to change
\nthinking and practices, so that their vulnerability is recognized, their
\nvoices heard \u2013 and responses made inclusive. For the full review:

Experts discuss successes and obstacles for children with disabilities
\nOn 18 May, the Doha International Institute for Family Studies and
\nDevelopment (DIIFSD) announced the completion of Project CHILD Voices from
\naround the World Special Report.\u00a0 Findings from the report were presented
\nat United Nations Headquarters as part of the International Day of the
\nFamily commemoration activities.\u00a0 In 2009, the DIIFSD, in partnership with
\nthe Public Policy Research Institute (PPRI) at Texas A&M University,
\ninitiated an international study on the status of children with
\ndisabilities and their families entitled Children and the International

International Online Training on Portage Early intervention and inclusion
\nin Community Based Rehabilitation (CBR)
\nFrom 15 to 25 June 25, the CBR Network held online training in order to
\nfacilitate holistic early childhood development. Portage strategy and
\naccompanying material have been modified to reflect local concerns and are
\nbeing used in about 145 countries. Portage is scientifically precise and
\nfacilitates the holistic development of all children.\u00a0 More information:

International VSA Festival
\nFrom 6 to 12 June, VSA, an international organization on arts and
\ndisability, brought together artists, educators, researchers, and
\npolicymakers with and without disabilities from around the world, for a
\nmulticultural celebration of the arts and arts education. The Festival
\nfeatured visual, performing, literary, and media artists and over 2,000
\nparticipants from around the world. The festival included the 2010
\nInternational VSA Education Conference on Advancing Inclusive Education and
\n21st Century Learning Skills through the Arts and a Pathway to Employment
\nfor artists with disabilities.

Web seminar on work and persons with disabilities
\nOn 22 June, representatives from the corporate sector shared best practices
\nin processes and programmes related to recruiting and retaining persons

\nLong-Term Implications\u2013Innovative Strategies for People with Disabilities,
\npresenters addressed topics of corporate assessment, the Americans with
\nDisabilities Act and recent legislative changes. More information:

\nThe International Social Security Association (ISSA), which is the
\nprincipal international institution bringing together social security
