The resolution also urges<br \/>\nGovernments and the UN system to strengthen data collection and statistics<br \/>\non disability. Furthermore, the resolution requests the Secretary-General<br \/>\nto improve accessibility and the inclusion of persons with disabilities<br \/>\nwithin the UN Secretariat and calls for a High-level Meeting on disability<br \/>\nand development in 2012. More information: <a href=\"http:\/\/www.un.org\/disabilities.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">http:\/\/www.un.org\/disabilities. <\/a><\/p>\n<p>UN Secretariat moves towards fully accessible facilities and services<br \/>\nThe newly established Inter-Departmental Task Force on Accessibility<br \/>\nadopted their Terms of Reference to further develop a coherent UN<br \/>\nSecretariat-wide policy on accessibility, including areas of information<br \/>\nand communication technologies, the built environment and human resources.<br \/>\nThe first phase of the work of the Task Force would include two working<br \/>\ngroups on documentation and interpretation.<\/p>\n<p>International Day of Persons with Disabilities commemorated<br \/>\nThe Day was marked around the world with events to further the inclusion of<br \/>\npersons with disabilities in social life and development on the basis of<br \/>\nequality, as well as to launch practical action to mainstream disability in<br \/>\nall aspects of development. This year the Day focused on the tools for<br \/>\naction to make the MDGs a reality for persons with disabilities, such as<br \/>\ncommunity-based rehabilitation (CBR) and the new Guidance Note on<br \/>\ndisability for UN Country Teams. Events were held at UN Headquarters in<br \/>\ncollaboration with the World Health Organization and other partners, as<br \/>\nwell as the second DESA Disability Film Festival. A bridge event was held<br \/>\non 2 December to highlight the linkages between disability and HIV\/AIDS,<br \/>\nsince 1 December is World AIDS Day (see below). SCRPD participated in a<br \/>\npanel discussion on Ageing and Disability organized by the NGO Committee on<br \/>\nAgeing on 2 December. The event covered issues related to ageing, long-term<br \/>\ndisability and disasters. More information:<br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.un.org\/disabilities\/default.asp?id=1540.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">http:\/\/www.un.org\/disabilities\/default.asp?id=1540. <\/a><\/p>\n<p>HIV\/AIDS also addressed on IDPD2010 as an emerging issue of concern<br \/>\nThe United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs (DESA), the<br \/>\nJoint United Nations Programme on HIV\/AIDS (UNAIDS) and the Permanent<br \/>\nMission of the United States to the UN co-organized a panel discussion on 2<br \/>\nDecember at UN Headquarters. The Panel highlighted the issue of AIDS and<br \/>\ndisability, including their linkages, with a view to foster the<br \/>\nproliferation, integration and development of inclusive HIV policies and<br \/>\nprogrammes. Participants discussed the need for increased advocacy for<br \/>\ncountry level work on AIDS and disability and enhanced collaboration<br \/>\nbetween development actors, donors, national partners, and civil society<br \/>\netc. Participants included representatives from the US Government, UN<br \/>\nagencies, donor agencies, organizations of persons with disabilities and<br \/>\ncivil society. The panel was held on 6 December at the UN Headquarters in New<br \/>\nYork. More information on women and girls with disabilities:<br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.un.org\/disabilities\/default.asp?navid=13&amp;pid=1514.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">http:\/\/www.un.org\/disabilities\/default.asp?navid=13&amp;pid=1514. <\/a><\/p>\n<p>WIPO &#8211; Project to facilitate access by VIPs to published works<br \/>\nThe 5th meeting of the WIPO\u2019s Stakeholders\u2019 Platform launched an initiative<br \/>\non 23 October to facilitate access to published works by visually impaired<br \/>\npersons (VIPs) and the print disabled. The meeting held in New Delhi, aimed<br \/>\nto explore the specific needs, and concerns, of both copyright owners and<br \/>\nreading impaired persons and brought together representatives of the VIP<br \/>\ncommunity, as well as publishers. The Platform approved the launch of TIGAR<br \/>\n&#8211; the Trusted Intermediary Global Accessible Resources project \u2013 which will<br \/>\nenable publishers to make their titles easily available to trusted<br \/>\nintermediaries. These intermediaries will create accessible formats and<br \/>\nshare them with each other and with specialized libraries. More<br \/>\ninformation:<br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.wipo.int\/pressroom\/en\/articles\/2010\/article_0043.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">http:\/\/www.wipo.int\/pressroom\/en\/articles\/2010\/article_0043.html <\/a><\/p>\n<p>UN official recognized for his work for persons with disabilities<br \/>\nThe Secretary-General\u2019s Special Adviser on Sport and Development, Wilfred<br \/>\nLemke, was granted the Bobby Award in Berlin for harnessing the power of<br \/>\nsport to foster the social inclusion and well-being of people living with<br \/>\nphysical and mental disabilities worldwide. Within the scope of his UN<br \/>\nmandate, Mr. Lemke advocates the greater use of adaptive sport and physical<br \/>\nactivity to foster inclusion of persons with disabilities in communities<br \/>\nand society as a whole. Mr. Lemke carried the Convention\u2019s message to the<br \/>\n2008 Summer Paralympics in Beijing and the 2010 Winter Paralympics in<br \/>\nVancouver, as well as to the 2009 and 2010 World Special Olympics in Idaho,<br \/>\nUnited States, and his home town of Bremen, Germany. Because of stigma and<br \/>\ndiscrimination, a majority are excluded from education, training and<br \/>\nemployment. In this short film, the International Labour Organization (ILO)<br \/>\nexamines what is possible for persons with intellectual disabilities, so<br \/>\nthat they are able to access opportunities to obtain decent work and a<br \/>\nbetter life. The overall aim of this Strategy entitled \u201cA Renewed<br \/>\nCommitment to a Barrier-Free Europe\u201d is to empower persons with<br \/>\ndisabilities, so that they can enjoy their full rights and benefit fully<br \/>\nfrom participating in society, as well as in the European economy, notably<br \/>\nthrough the Single Market. Achieving this and ensuring effective<br \/>\nimplementation of the CRPD across the EU calls for consistency. This<br \/>\nStrategy identifies actions at the EU level to supplement national<br \/>\ninitiatives, and it determines the mechanisms needed to implement the CRPD<br \/>\nat the EU level, including at EU institutions.
