Obama supporters cheered\nor wept to learn that the next US president would be Obama. Then we\ncheered or wept again when Obama mentioned people with disabilities in\nhis acceptance speech. History was made\u2013not only for America, not only\nfor Black people, not only for Kenya and all of Africa, not only for\nIndigenous peoples, but also for people with disabilities.\nBut we cannot afford to allow the moment to end here. Whether we\nsupported Obama, McCain, or another candidate, we all know there is far\ntoo much work ahead before we can say, \u201cYes, we have made real change\nfor people with disabilities.\u201d\n\nIt is time for people with disabilities, our loved ones, our neighbors,\n\nand colleagues to join together, across ideological divides, to reach\nout to Obama. We should all send an email to Kareem Dale, Obama\u2019s\nNational Disability Vote Director (at <a href=\"http:\/\/br.f431.mail.yahoo.com\/ym\/Compose?To=kdale@barackobama.com&amp;YY=48087&amp;y5beta=yes&amp;y5beta=yes&amp;order=down&amp;sort=date&amp;pos=0&amp;view=a&amp;head=b\">kdale@barackobama.com<\/a>), WITH\nCOPIES TO Anne Hayes, a volunteer on the Obama Disability Policy\nCommittee (at <a href=\"http:\/\/br.f431.mail.yahoo.com\/ym\/Compose?To=ahayesku@hotmail.com&amp;YY=48087&amp;y5beta=yes&amp;y5beta=yes&amp;order=down&amp;sort=date&amp;pos=0&amp;view=a&amp;head=b\">ahayesku@hotmail.com<\/a>).\n\nFirst, we should thank Obama \u2014 and also Kareem Dale \u2014 for mentioning\npeople with disabilities in Obama\u2019s acceptance speech on November 4.\nEnsure that they understand how much it matters simply for us to be\nincluded. How did you feel when Obama mentioned us? Share your story.\n\nSecond, we should tell Obama and Kareem Dale that we are aware of\nObama\u2019s disability platform. He promised to increase educational\nopportunities; end discrimination; increase employment opportunities;\nand support independent, community-based living for Americans with\ndisabilities. And he promised to sign the Convention on the Rights of\nPersons with Disabilities (CRPD), the first international,\nlegally-binding human rights treaty for people with disabilities. Tell\n\nObama and Kareem Dale that we are ready to call Obama to account if he\nfails us.
