{"id":21375,"date":"2011-10-23T19:16:40","date_gmt":"2011-10-23T22:16:40","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.inclusive.org.br\/?p=21375"},"modified":"2011-10-23T19:16:40","modified_gmt":"2011-10-23T22:16:40","slug":"brazil-proposes-world-down-syndrome-day-to-un","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/inclusivenews.com.br\/?p=21375","title":{"rendered":"Brazil proposes World Down Syndrome Day at the UN"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-14434\" title=\"world_down_syndrome_day\" src=\"http:\/\/inclusivenews.com.br\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/03\/world_down_syndrome_day1-300x108.jpg\" alt=\"World Down Syndrome Day logo.\" width=\"300\" height=\"108\" \/>The government of Brazil presented a\u00a0draft resolution\u00a0for the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.worlddownsyndromeday.org\/\">World Down Syndrome Day<\/a>,\u00a021 \/ 3, to be recognized\u00a0at the United\u00a0Nations.\u00a0The Brazilian delegation\u00a0at the UN\u00a0expects\u00a0the proposal <a href=\"http:\/\/www.un.org\/en\/ga\/third\/66\/proposalstatus.shtml\">A\/C.3\/66\/L27 <\/a>receives support from other\u00a0sponsors.\u00a0The\u00a0project is expected to\u00a0be voted next week n the United Nation&#8217;s Third Commission, which deals with\u00a0humanitarian issues.<\/p>\n<p>The World Down Syndrome Day was established by\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ds-int.org\/\">Down\u00a0Syndrome\u00a0International<\/a> as 21\u00a0March to raise public awareness about people with Down syndrome and\u00a0to form\u00a0self-determined,\u00a0productive\u00a0citizens with\u00a0Down syndrome, that are included\u00a0in society and have a better quality\u00a0of life.<\/p>\n<p>The\u00a0date was chosen because\u00a0it is written\u00a021 \/ 3\u00a0(or\u00a03 \/ 21), which\u00a0alludes\u00a0to the\u00a0three\u00a0chromosomes\u00a0number 21 that people with\u00a0Down syndrome\u00a0carry.\u00a0The idea\u00a0of the day\u00a0came from geneticist\u00a0Stylianos\u00a0E.\u00a0Antonarakis from University of\u00a0Geneva,\u00a0and was\u00a0defended in\u00a02005\u00a0at the International Congress\u00a0of Down Syndrome\u00a0in Mallorca, Spain.\u00a0The\u00a0date\u00a0was\u00a0first celebrated in 2006, in Singapore.<\/p>\n<p>In Brazil,\u00a0World Down Syndrome Day has been celebrated\u00a0since 2006.
