Films from MetaSocial Institute’s campaign “Difference is normal” were selected to represent Brazil and will be featured at a UN Film Festival during the celebrations of International Day of Persons with Disabilities, on December 2, at the United Nations in New York.<\/p>\n

The campaign consists of 4 short films – Adolescent, Differences, Blue Girl and Different Girl – that have been broadcasted on TV in Brazil.<\/p>\n

MetaSocial Institute has been working for over 17 years developing actions together with the media to promote social inclusion. It is a nonprofit organization that works primarily through partnerships.<\/p>\n

The institutional campaign “It\u2019s Normal to be Different”, is the foundation and part of the MetaSocial Institute’s projects.<\/p>\n

It is composed of institutional short films for TV, that aim to show society in a positive, cheerful and colorful way, the potential of all people, regardless of their limitations, raising awareness about diversity and leading everyone to believe and understand that normal does not exist at all.<\/p>\n

All this professional work, which involves people and corporations is entirely voluntary.<\/p>\n

Each year the impact of the campaigns on the public increases and breaks paradigms. Each point of broadcasting on network TV, especially the Globo network reaches more than 40 million people and impacts positively by the collective unconscious about people with Down syndrome in particular.<\/p>\n

In 2011 MetaSocial partnered with UNICEF Montenegro to exhibit the latest short film, Different Girl, in their campaign “It’s about Ability”.<\/p>\n

Ms. Asha Rose Migrio, Deputy Secretary-General, the Ambassadors of the Philippines, Sweden and Tanzania to the United Nations, and other representatives of Government and civil society will participate in the opening.<\/p>\n

The opening will be a musical performance by students from the New York Institute for Special Education.<\/p>\n

10.30 a.m. to 11:45 a.m. Panel Discussion: Towards inclusive development: improving data and statistics on disability This panel discussion will focus on concretizing the recommendations for improving the availability and quality of data on disability.<\/p>\n

Panellists will explore the technicalities of measuring disability and provide an in-depth review of existing internationally agreed standards for measuring disability, identifying the advantages and limitations of various methods of data collection, including censuses.<\/p>\n

The speakers will share their national-level experience and examine ways to improve both the quality and quantity of national disability statistics to create a strong knowledge basis for informed policy-making and to contribute to the ultimate goal of disability inclusive development.<\/p>\n

Panelists: Washington Group on Statistics, World Bank, Global Partnership for Disability and Development, and other representatives of Government, UN system and civil society.<\/p>\n

12:00 noon to 1:15 p.m.: Panel Discussion: Mainstreaming disability in the global development agenda: experience in other development issues<\/p>\n

This panel will focus on the experience in mainstreaming of other issues in the development agenda and look at conceptual frameworks, methodologies, approaches and data sources utilized by the United Nations system in the preparation of global development reports. The panel will also explore how disability can be integrated into the United Nations\u2019 existing global reports on development and consider options for a world report on disability and development.<\/p>\n
