A diferen\u00e7a em rela\u00e7\u00e3o aos dados do Censo 2000 (14,3% da popula\u00e7\u00e3o) se deve a um aprimoramento metodol\u00f3gico, que possibilitou uma melhor capta\u00e7\u00e3o da informa\u00e7\u00e3o.<\/p>\n<p>O maior percentual foi encontrado na Regi\u00e3o Nordeste (26,6%), enquanto que a Sul e a Centro-Oeste mostraram as menores propor\u00e7\u00f5es (22,5%). Rio Grande do Norte (27,8%), Para\u00edba (27,8%) e Cear\u00e1 (27,7%) apresentaram os maiores percentuais. J\u00e1 Roraima (21,2%), Santa Catarina (21,3%) e Mato Grosso do Sul (21,5%) tiveram as menores incid\u00eancias.<\/p>\n<p>A defici\u00eancia visual foi a mais frequente, atingindo 35,8 milh\u00f5es de pessoas com dificuldade para enxergar (18,8%), mesmo de \u00f3culos ou lentes de contato. A defici\u00eancia visual severa (pessoas que declararam ter grande dificuldade de enxergar ou que n\u00e3o conseguiam de modo algum) atingia 6,6 milh\u00f5es de pessoas, sendo que 506,3 mil eram cegos (0,3%).<\/p>\n<p>A dificuldade de locomo\u00e7\u00e3o incidia sobre 13,3 milh\u00f5es de pessoas (7,0%). A defici\u00eancia motora severa (pessoas com grande dificuldade ou incapazes de se locomover) foi declarada por 4,4 milh\u00f5es de pessoas, das quais 734,4 mil n\u00e3o conseguiam caminhar ou subir escadas de modo algum (0,4%). J\u00e1 a defici\u00eancia auditiva acometia 9,7 milh\u00f5es de pessoas (5,1%), sendo que a defici\u00eancia auditiva severa (pessoas com grande dificuldade ou incapazes de ouvir) foi declarada por 2,1 milh\u00f5es de pessoas, das quais 344,2 mil eram surdas (0,2%).
