No dia 16 de maio de 2001 os m\u00e9dicos colocaram Maren nos meus bra\u00e7os com hesita\u00e7\u00e3o. Eles n\u00e3o tinham certeza de como eu reagiria \u00e0 not\u00edcia de que Maren, aparentemente, tinha s\u00edndrome de Down. Aqueles que conhecem a nossa hist\u00f3ria sabem que saber da trissomia n\u00e3o foi nada de mais. E hoje, 7 anos mais tarde, nos damos conta do quanto n\u00e3o foi nada de mais para a nossa fam\u00edlia e na vida de Maren.<\/p>\n

Maren est\u00e1 terminando a Pr\u00e9-escola como decididamente uma das meninas mais populares da sua turma. Ela n\u00e3o \u00e9 adorada pelo cromossomo extra. Brady n\u00e3o quer ficar perto de Maren para se sentir melhor fazendo uma caridade. E Drew certamente n\u00e3o pensa no materia gen\u00e9tico a mais da Maren quando eles sentam juntos para almo\u00e7ar e ficam soltando risinhos. Layne n\u00e3o estava preocupada com as c\u00e9lulas de Maren enquanto riam sem parar no teatro na semana passada e Gracie n\u00e3o dava a m\u00ednima para s\u00edndrome de Down quando implorava a sua m\u00e3e para passar a noite em nossa casa. Tatum n\u00e3o estava pensando na trissomia do cromossomo 21 quando ela sussurrou, com a voz um bocado preocupada, que ainda n\u00e3o tinha comprado um presente legal para a Maren.<\/p>\n

Enquanto eu entrava na escola hoje, as crian\u00e7as espontaneamente come\u00e7aram a responder que iam \u00e0 festa de anivers\u00e1rio da Maren no pr\u00f3ximo fim de semana e eles estavam muito animados. Veja voc\u00ea, a Maren irradia Maren-idade. Com um cromossomo a mais ou n\u00e3o, Maren tem aquela qu\u00ea especial, o fator X, carisma, o que quer que seja que isso se chame. Ela n\u00e3o herdou isso do Jon e certamente n\u00e3o pegou de mim ! Maren simplesmente tem essa qualidade . \u00c9 surpreendente.<\/p>\n

E, voltando 7 anos atr\u00e1s, eu gostaria de ter dito para aqueles m\u00e9dicos \u201cEu n\u00e3o tenho medo da s\u00edndrome de Down. Em 7 anos, Maren vai se formar na Pr\u00e9-escola como participante ativa de sua turma. Ela vai ter sua quarta apresenta\u00e7\u00e3o de dan\u00e7a. Ela ter\u00e1 bons amigos que gostam dela de verdade e, mais importante, ela gostar\u00e1 de si mesma e de sua vida.\u201d<\/p>\n

Talvez dessa maneira eu conseguisse faz\u00ea-los se sentirem melhor sobre o que eles estavam tentando me avisar.<\/p>\n

On May 16, 2001, the doctors tentatively put Maren in my arms. They weren’t sure how we would react to their news, that Maren appeared to have indications of Trisomy 21. For those of you who know our story, it wasn’t a big deal. And, today, seven years later, we realize how “not a big deal” it really is for our family and in Maren’s life.<\/p>\n

Maren is finishing up Kindy as decidedly one of the most popular girls in her class. She isn’t loved because of her extra chromosome. She isn’t blessed with wonderful friends in spite of her extra chromosome. Brady doesn’t want to hang out with Maren to make himself feel better about doing charity work. And, Drew certainly doesn’t think about Maren’s extra genetic material when they sit next to each other at lunch and giggle. Layne wasn’t concerned about Maren’s cells as they laughed non-stop through Horton Hears a Who last weekend at the theater, and Gracie could care less about Down syndrome when she begs her mom to spend the night at our house. Tatum wasn’t wondering about T21 as she whispered in a rather concerned voice that she hadn’t picked out a great present for Maren yet.<\/p>\n

As I walked Maren into school today, the kids started spontaneously RSVPing to Maren’s birthday party next weekend, and they were so excited. You see, Maren just radiates Maren-ness. Extra chromosome or not, Maren just has that special something, the X-factor, charisma, whatever you want to call it. She didn’t get it from Jon, and she certainly didn’t get it from me! Maren just has this quality — it is amazing.<\/p>\n

And, rewind seven years, I wish I could have told those doctors this: ” I am not fearful of Down syndrome. In 7 years, Maren will graduate from Kindergarten as a full-participant in her class. She will be having her 4th dance recital. She will have good friends who truly love her. And, most importantly, she will love herself and her life.”<\/p>\n

Maybe then, I could have made them feel better about what they were trying to “warn” me about.<\/p>\n
