H\u00e1 18 meses Foley deu in\u00edcio ao processo em nome de Holbrook, depois que soube que o homem mais velho com s\u00edndrome de Down que constava no livro Guiness havia morrido em 2007. Ela achava que seu paciente na institui\u00e7\u00e3o Elm North em Waseca, Minesota, nos Estados Unidos poderia obter o t\u00edtulo.<\/span><\/p>\n

O texto da carta diz \u201cTemos o prazer de confirmar que o senhor obteve o t\u00edtulo de homem mais velho com s\u00edndrome de Down com vida, e um certificado que comprova o fato foi enviado pelo correio hoje\u201d. <\/span><\/p>\n

Os dados foram assim colocados no livro: Bert Holbrook, americano, nascido em 24 de agosto de 1928, \u00e9 atualmente o homem mais velho com s\u00edndrome de Down, com 80 anos e 79 dias em 11 de novembro de 2008.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cDo mundo !\u201d, repetiu Foley para Holbrook, que sorriu ao ver o documento diante dele.<\/span><\/p>\n

Ele nasceu em Waseca, filho de Bert e Lilian Holbrook numa \u00e9poca em que a expectativa de vida das pessoas com s\u00edndrome de Down era de 9 anos, a institucionaliza\u00e7\u00e3o era a regra e os cuidados m\u00e9dicos m\u00ednimos, de acordo com especialistas.<\/span><\/p>\n

Mas Holbrook sobreviveu nesta comunidade, vivendo com seus pais e uma irm\u00e3 mais velha, Marian, trabalhando na mercearia da fam\u00edlia. Durante 60 anos ele foi um rosto familiar na pequena cidade, e era conhecido como Junior. <\/span><\/p>\n

Em 1984 Holbrook foi morar em uma casa para idosos chamada Elm Homes, e foi transferido para Elm North em 2004. <\/span><\/p>\n

O dono da Elm Homes, Gene Miller, pretende emoldurar o certificado de Holbrook e pendur\u00e1-lo em seu quarto. <\/span><\/p>\n

WASECA \u2014 Pat Foley was so excited when the official Guinness World Record arrived for Bert Holbrook a week ago that she wanted to stand on a street corner and shout out the news.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s so cool,\u201d Foley said.<\/p>\n

Holbrook now has the certificate to prove he holds the Guinness World Record as the oldest living person with Down syndrome \u2014 in the world.<\/p>\n

Eighteen months ago, Foley began the process on Holbrook\u2019s behalf after learning that the oldest man with Down syndrome, according to Guinness, had died in 2007. She began to think that her patient at Elm North in Waseca, could hold the record.<\/p>\n

Holbrook turned 80 years old in August.<\/p>\n

On Tuesday, Foley and Melissa Stoltz, who also cares for Holbrook at Elm North, showed him the certificate and read him a letter from the Records Management Team at Guinness World Records in London.<\/p>\n

The letter reads, \u201cWe are pleased to confirm that you have set the new Guinness World Record for \u2018Oldest man with Down\u2019s syndrome – living\u2019 and a certificate to commemorate has been sent to you by post today.<\/p>\n

\u201cDetails of your achievement have been entered into our records as follows: Bert Holbrook (USA, b. 24 August 1928) is currently the oldest fully authenticated male with Down\u2019s syndrome aged 80 years 79 days as of 11 November 2008.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIn the world!\u201d Foley repeated to Holbrook, who smiled at the document held in front of him.<\/p>\n

He was born in Waseca to Bert and Lillian Holbrook in a time when people with Down syndrome lived to an average age of nine years, institutions were the norm and medical care was minimal, according to experts.<\/p>\n

But Holbrook thrived in the Waseca community where he lived with his parents and older sister, Marian, and helped out in the family grocery store. For 60 years he was a familiar face around town and everyone knew him as Junior.<\/p>\n

Holbrook went to live at Elm Homes in 1984 and moved to Elm North in 2004.<\/p>\n

Elm Homes owner Gene Miller plans to frame the Guinness World Record certificate for Holbrook\u2019s room, Foley said.<\/p>\n

Holbrook\u2019s 90-year-old sister in Indiana is very excited about the record for her brother and Foley is happy for the publicity the Guinness World Record has brought to Holbrook and others.<\/p>\n

\u201cI want everyone to know how awesome this population is,\u201d she said about the Down syndrome community.<\/p>\n
