A Hist\u00f3ria de Jon (contada por sua m\u00e3e)<\/p>\n

Nosso filho Jon, nasceu em mar\u00e7o de 1982. Ele foi o terceiro de nossos
\nfilhos e uma caixa de surpresas, estando eu com 40 anos. Eu poderia ter
\ndescoberto que ele era “down” antes do seu nascimento mas, nunca pensei que
\nacontecesse comigo nada parecido com o fato de ter um beb\u00ea com alguma
\ndificuldade, embora se tenha maior chance de te-lo numa gravidez tardia;
\nnunca experimentei droga, nunca fumei, nunca bebi e, assim, rejeitava a
\nid\u00e9ia de fazer teste que nos revelasse aquela condi\u00e7\u00e3o, Assim qque ele
\nnasceu, as enfermeiras o trouxeram para o meu quarto para qque form\u00e1ssemos
\nv\u00ednculo. Isto n\u00e3o tinha acontecido com meus outros dois beb\u00eas, mas eu
\npensava que os m\u00e9todos haviam mudado. Meu marido e eu n\u00e3o t\u00ednhamos sido
\ninformados at\u00e9 a manh\u00e3 seguinte, que hav\u00edamos ganho um menino “down” e o
\nobstetra tentava ser muito positivo, dizendo-nos: “se voces tivessem que ter
\numa crian\u00e7a com “down” voces teriam uma crian\u00e7a satisfat\u00f3ria” pois seus
\nm\u00fasculos n\u00e3o eram fl\u00e1cidos e n\u00e3o havia problemas m\u00e9dicos. Com o pediatra a
\nhist\u00f3ria foi diferente. Ele nos aconselhou a leva-lo para casa, senta-lo a
\num canto e dar-lhe um saco de papel para brincar, pois ele n\u00e3o apreciaria
\nbrinquedos. Meu marido e eu, hoje, rimos destes dias, pois o m\u00e9dico estava
\ncerto.Nosso filho brinca com sacos de papel… e de pl\u00e1stico. Veja voc\u00ea: ele
\nhoje \u00e9 um funcion\u00e1rio de uma “safeway” e de sacos de mantimentos. Mas vou
\ncontinuar a minha historia.<\/p>\n

Jon ingressou em programas de apoio, com a idade de 8 semanas, e tamb\u00e9m na
\nescola. Tivemos que ensinar tudo o que os outros beb\u00eas aprendem sozinhos;
\nele aprendia e , meu marido e eu, nunca pensamos nele como uma dificuldade e
\nesper\u00e1vamos que ele fizesse tudo o que nossas outras crian\u00e7as fizeram. Ele
\ncresceu e foi para o Jardim de Inf\u00e2ncia regular, quando tinha 6 anos. Ele
\ncumpria o curriculum, dava arte, matem\u00e1tica, leitura, escrita, indo depois
\npara aula especial com professor educacional. Assim que chegou ao gin\u00e1sio,
\nele era t\u00e3o conhecido no sistema da escola, que lhe foi dada liberdade de ir
\nde classe em classe sozinho, sem acompanhante. Na 11a. s\u00e9rie foi-lhe
\nensinado a pegar o \u00f4nibus sozinho, o que lhe abriu um mundo novo de
\nliberdade.a ele frequenta, por iniciativa pr\u00f3pria, cursos de treinamento
\nescolar, nata\u00e7\u00e3o, Karat\u00ea (faixa marron), culin\u00e1ria, computa\u00e7\u00e3o, golf, t\u00eanis
\ne, neste outono, vai tomar aula de arco e flexa. Jon ainda est\u00e1 aprendendo
\na cada ano e suas habilidades continuam a crescer.<\/p>\n

Jon come\u00e7ou a ajudar seu irm\u00e3o mais velho com o trabalho na grama de sua
\ncasa e era remunerado por isso. Ele, rapidamente entendeu que poderia
\neconomizar o seu dinheiro para poder ir ao cinema, ou comprar refrigerantes.
\nQuando seu irm\u00e3o foi para o col\u00e9gio e parou com o servi\u00e7o na grama, Jon
\ntamb\u00e9m ficou desempregado. Seu pai foi com ele a um Servi\u00e7o de Seguro,
\npreencheu un formul\u00e1rio e Jon estava empreegado. Seu pai ficou como seu
\ninstrutor por cerca de 3 semanas, ao fim das quais estava com bom desempenho
\nn\u00e3o precisando mais dos treinos.Isto aconteceu h\u00e1 7 anos. Ele est\u00e1 na uni\u00e3o
\nfazendo sal\u00e1rios com seguro, 3 semanas de f\u00e9rias e todos os benef\u00edcios da
\nuni\u00e3o. Nestes 7 anos, ele se atrazou uma vez e se ausentou, por doen\u00e7a, 2
\nvezes. Jon leva seu trabalho muito a s\u00e9rio, tem em mente os compromissos
\npara a semana seguinte, acorda na hora e est\u00e1 limpo e asseado para ir
\ntrabalhar. Trabalhar com o p\u00fablico tem lhe conferido um mundo de
\nexperi\u00eancias… algumas boas, outras nem tanto, por\u00e9m, sabe lidar com todas.
\nEste ver\u00e3o ele quiz retribuir \u00e0 comunidade e deciciu fazer trabalho
\nvolunt\u00e1rio para o Banco de Alimentos, duas vezes por semana. Jon quer fazer
\ntudo que seu irm\u00e3o mais velho faz e, seu maior desapontamento foi quando, ao
\ncompletar 16 anos n\u00e3o pode dirigir um carro: Jon, por\u00e9m superou mais esta
\netapa e, com a ajuda do “Tornar-se Independente” e do Centro Regional de
\nNorth Bay em 2004, obteve sua Carteira de Motorista. Tem seu pr\u00f3prio carro,
\ndirige, n\u00e3o somente para o col\u00e9gio mas tamb\u00e9m para o trabalho e para
\nqualquer lugar que queira ir na \u00e1rea. \u00c9 muito bom motorista. Sempre
\nensinamos a Jon, a fazer as coisas de maneira certa logo de sa\u00edda, o que o
\nfar\u00e1, a partir da\u00ed, acertar sempre.<\/p>\n

A fam\u00edlia toda tem muito orgulho das realiza\u00e7\u00f5es de Jon. Ele continua a nos
\nmaravilhar; assim, olhamos para o futuro com muita felicidade. Ele tem,
\nverdadeiramente, sido aben\u00e7oado.
\nA\u00ed v\u00e3o fotos de Jon com seu novo carro. Ele \u00e9 volunt\u00e1rio no Hospital
\nPetaluma Valley este ver\u00e3o. Ele \u00e9 o que chamamos de doce animador dos nossos
\ndias. Ele visita os pacientes, anota seus pedidos para as refei\u00e7\u00f5es dos dias
\nseguintes, entrega flores e, em geral, ajuda onde for preciso. Semana
\npassada, pediram a Jon para jogar cartas com a paciente mais idosa,
\nfazendo-lhe assim, companhia. Entre suas tarefas no Seguro (safeway) e
\nvoluntariado ele \u00e9 um jovem de neg\u00f3cios.

\n<\/span>Jon’s Story<\/strong> (As told by his mom Sally)<\/div>\n

Our son Jonathan was born in March of 1982. He was the 3rd one of our children and a textbook case as I was 40 years old. I could have found out he was downs before he was born but I never thought anything like having a handicap child would happen to me. Even though you have a greater chance of having a downs child later in life, I had never taken any kind of drugs, didn\u2019t smoke and didn\u2019t drink so therefore I rejected any test that might have told us before hand of his condition. Shortly after he was born the nurses brought him to my room so we could bond. That had not happened with my other two ba<\/span><\/p>\n

bies, but I kept thinking times have changed. My husband and I were not told till the next morning that we had a down\u2019s boy and the ob-gyn doctor was trying to be very positive telling us quote \u201cif you had to have a down\u2019s child you had a good one\u201d due to his muscle tone not being floppy and no medical problems. The pediatrician, however, was a different story. He advised us to take him home, sit him in the corner and give him a paper sack to play with, as he wouldn\u2019t want toys to play with. My husband and I often laugh these days, as the doctor was right. Our son does play with paper sacks \u2026\u2026..and plastic. You see he is a courtesy clerk for Safeway and bags groceries. But I am getting ahead of my story.<\/span><\/p>\n

Jon started programs to help him at the age of 8 weeks, and has been in school ever since. We had to teach him everything other babies take for granted. But he learned and my husband and I never thought of him as handicapped and expected him to do everything our other children had done. He grew and started a regular kindergarten class when he was 6 years of age. As he continued he would have P.E., art, homeroom in a regular classroom and all his math, reading, writing he was pulled out and went to a special class with a special ed teacher. By the time he got to high school he was so well known in the school system that he was given the freedom to go from class to class by himself without a buddy to escort him. By the 11th grade he was taught to take the city bus by himself and that opened up a whole new world of freedom to him. He now attends the SRJC on his own taking such classes such as college skills, swimming, karate (he is a brown belt), cooking class, computer class, golf, tennis, and this fall he is going to take archery. He is still learning every year and his skills continue to grow. <\/span><\/p>\n

Jon started out helping his older brother in a lawn business being a gofer for his brother and getting paid for it. He quickly learned that he could save his money and then go to the movies, or buy a soda. When his brother went on to college and gave up the lawn business, Jon too was out of a job. His dad and him went to Safeway and filled out an application and Jon got hired. His father acted as his job coach for about 3 weeks after which Safeway said he is doing just fine and we won\u2019t need you to aid him anymore. That was 7 years ago. He is in the union making union wages with insurance, three weeks vacation and all of the benefits of the union. In the 7 years he has been there he has only been late 1 time and absent due to illness 2 days. He takes his job seriously and makes sure he knows his schedule for the coming week and that he gets up on time and is clean and neat when he leaves for work. Working in the public has given him a world of experiences\u2026\u2026\u2026some good and some not so good but he has handled each one. This summer he wanted to give back to the community so he decided to volunteer at the Food Bank two days a week.<\/span><\/p>\n

Jon has wanted to do everything his older brother has done and his biggest disappointment was turning 16 and not being able to drive a car. But Jon overcame that also and with the help of Becoming Independent and North Bay Regional Center in 2004 he got his California driver\u2019s license. He has his own car and drives not only to college but also to work and anyplace else he might want to go in the area. He is a very good driver. We have always taught Jon to do things the right way the first time as he doesn\u2019t forget and will do it the same way each time thereafter.<\/span><\/p>\n

The entire family is very proud of Jon\u2019s achievements. He continues to amaze us and we look forward to the future with great happiness. He has truly been a blessing.<\/span><\/p>\n

Here are pictures of Jon with his new car. He <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/strong>is volunteering at the Petaluma Valley Hospital this summer. He is what we use to call Candy Stripers in my day. He goes and visits the patients, takes their requests for the next days meals, delivers flowers and in general helps out where needed. Last week he was asked to play cards with one of the elderly patients to keep her company. Between his job at Safeway and volunteering he is one busy young man. <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/div>\n
